Texture

Seamless texture generator

Draw the pattern on a small grid, like the rows of bricks or the direction of the planks, pick a material and get a square texture. After the model paints it, its edges are adjusted so that it wraps: repeated, it shows no line at the border.

Every picture on this page was made for it: a starter template's sketch, one line of description and an art style, then the same finishing steps as your own results. Nothing was retouched.

After you generate

A built-in image editor

Open any result under “Edit assets”: layers with blend modes; rectangle, ellipse, lasso and magic-wand selections; levels, hue and temperature; filters, clone, text and a history panel. Saving adds a new version and the original stays. Layers, selections, clone, text and history are in the pro mode, which is free.

A built-in image editor

One-click style unification

Put the assets in one project and give it an art style. One click then repaints every 2D result in the project in that style, and runs the project's 3D models through the de-AI pass with it. The AI mode costs 5 credits or more per image, with the total shown before anything runs; the free offline mode evens out palette and outlines only.

How to make one

  1. 1Create a “Texture” and pick the material: stone, wood, metal, fabric, grass, sand, or “from the description”.
  2. 2Sketch the pattern at the scale you want. Two rows of bricks on the grid means big bricks; eight rows means small ones.
  3. 3Generate with “seamless” on (it is by default). The result wraps on both axes; the 3×3 views on this page are the files as delivered.

How the seam goes away

Image models are asked for a tileable picture, and about half the time the edges still don't match. In our first four runs, the colour step across the border was up to eight times the step between neighbouring pixels inside the picture: a hard line every time the texture repeats.

So after the model, every seamless texture goes through a periodic-plus-smooth decomposition (L. Moisan, 2011). The picture is split into a part that wraps and a smooth part that carries the jump at the edges, and the smooth part is dropped. The detail stays where it was; what changes is a gentle shift in brightness, strongest near the edges.

Good to know

  • You get the colour map only. Normal, roughness and height maps aren't made yet.
  • Lighting is kept flat on purpose, so the texture doesn't carry a light direction of its own.
  • One big, distinct feature (a single crack, one flower) repeats visibly over a large surface. Keep the pattern even if the texture has to cover a lot of ground.

Questions

How do I use it in Unity or Godot?

Import the PNG, keep its wrap mode on Repeat, and set how often it repeats with the material's tiling scale.

What size is it?

1024 or 512 px square. Both are powers of two, so the engine can build mipmaps.

Can I use the results in a commercial game?

Yes. Our terms hand over whatever rights we hold in what you generate. Each image model also has terms of its own, so look at the one you picked, and a result that looks like an existing character or logo is still that character or logo.

Does the file say it was made with AI?

Yes, in a machine-readable tag in the file's metadata. The picture itself isn't touched.
